SARDI Port Adelaide

SARDI Port Adelaide

'SARDI Port Adelaide' was developed as a solution to revive the Port Adelaide waterfront and specifically the iconic and much-loved Hart's Mill. As a research and development institute for aquatic science and an expansion of the tertiary institution opposite, the scheme invites the public into spaces of reflection and recreation via creative (re)use of water and technology.

Spaces are arranged on either side of a central atrium which provides circulation. Educational rooms face the existing TAFE opposite, while research labs and offices inhabit the more reclusive portion of the site.

The scheme inventively uses water induced with thermochromic slurry to shade the structure and control heat-gain while offering continuous animation within the interior.

Throughout the design, the use of water and technology animates windows, ceilings and floors as natural light penetrates the thermochromic slurry.

The forces of the existing buildings influence the form of the design.
